Though we may not be able to turn back time, chemical peels can help reveal younger, fresher, healthier skin through a series of treatments.
Chemical peels are substances that are placed on the skin to remove or improve the appearance of imperfections. Basically, they injure the skin in a controlled manner. Because of this injury, the body is stimulated into producing its own collagen and other substances that can help the skin heal. This healing process creates fresher, healthier looking skin. Chemical peels vary in strength, depending on the severity of the skin condition being treated.
A chemical peel needs to be done by a dermatologist or other medical professional – like the ones here at Dermatology Associates, with offices in Norwood, Foxboro and Franklin. We offer SkinMedica Vitalize and Rejuvenate peels to treat fine lines, wrinkles and roughness. Contact Dermatology Associates today to find out if a chemical peel is right for you.
The benefits of a well-done chemical peel include:
- A reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
- A reduction of scarring, including acne scars
- Even skin tone
- A vibrant complexion
- A removal or reduction of imperfections like age spots, some kinds of acne and freckles
- The smoothing of skin that’s rough or has been damaged by the sun
Chemical peels are made out several acids, including alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) and glycolic acids. These acids are considered the most gentle. Other chemical peels are beta-hydroxy acids and retinoic acid peels, which are based on Vitamin A and are used for deeper peels. Phenol peels are also used for deep peels.
Patients who decide on a chemical peel may need to prepare for it up to two weeks in advance, depending on the depth of the peel. It is also recommended to stop smoking and taking drugs – like aspirin and blood thinners — that could interfere with the healing process.
Before the procedure, your skin will be thoroughly cleaned. The peel is then “painted” on the face.
Depending on the strength of the peel, some people heal from the treatment within a day or two. The skin will be red, but the redness will dissipate after a few days and be replaced by scaling. You can soothe the skin with lotion but you will need to use sunscreen when going outside, as the skin will be extremely sensitive.
Some patients report seeing results after just one peel. A series of three peels, three to six weeks apart, is recommended for optimal results. This allows each peel to build upon the last, and deliver the highest level of treatment to your skin.
We can help you determine which chemical peel is right for you. Depending on the depth of the peel, we will help you create a pre- and post-peel care routine to ensure you get the most out of your treatment. Contact Dermatology Associates today to schedule your consultation.
