What is PRP for Hair Restoration?
PRP treatments have long been used in other medical applications because high concentrations of platelets promote growth and stimulate healing of all kinds of tissues. PRP for hair restoration uses your own platelets to stimulate dormant hair follicles and allows for the regenerative process of hair growth to begin again.
What Can I Expect?
The day of your PRP for hair restoration treatment we will do a small blood draw. Your blood is then spun down in a centrifuge for several minutes to separate the blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma. During this time the physician will have you numb the treatment area with either ice or a topical spray to ensure that you are comfortable during the treatment. Once spun down and separated the PRP solution is administered into the scalp forming a platelet-rich fibrin matrix, or PRFM. This platelet-rich fibrin matrix contains stem cells and growth factors that are vital components for hair restoration to occur.
You can expect to do a minimum of 3 treatments, spaced 6 – 10 weeks apart with some patients needing up to 6 treatments. Results vary and maintenance treatments will be needed depending on what your desired outcome may be.
What Are the Benefits of PRP for Hair Restoration?
Many people chose to pursue PRP for hair restoration because of its less invasive nature and natural approach. There is little to no downtime following the treatment and you are able to return to your daily activities following your treatments.
Who is A Good Candidate for PRP for Hair Restoration?
Most people dealing with thinning hair or androgenetic alopecia are considered good candidates for treatment. A cosmetic consultation is required and will help to determine if PRP for hair restoration is right for you. In some instances, a medical visit may be required prior to the start of your treatment – this will be determined during your cosmetic consultation.
Please note that PRP for hair restoration is not considered a medical necessity and therefore is not covered by insurance.
